Spelling Errors - Kills Professionalism!
February 2nd, 2008 at 6:58 pm by Lord Bloggit
It amazes me that people (including web designers) will go to a lot of trouble putting a professinal web site together and then they forget to proof read it!
I came across the Irish Webmaster Forum recently and surfed my way to a ‘noobie’ web designer in Galway. His site Forbairt Media looks impressive but it appears that the designer/owner has a ‘flare’ rather than a ‘flair’ for design. I sincerely hope he has ….. because his ‘flare’ for spelling isn’t the best.
I must compliment his choice of business name ….. Forbairt = Development in Irish ….. Forbairt Media …. a very good name with a very good Irish connection.
An aside note …. I reckon the word ‘receive’ is the most mis-spelt word on the internet. As soon as I see ‘recieve’ I lose (another word that gets the ‘loose’ spelling) interest in what I’m reading.
Bad spelling on a site which gives the impression that its mother tongue is English = bad service = bad business for me so I move on.
…. If you see a spelling mistake on this blog …. good for you …. in my defence ….. this blog is just a listing of my personal ramblings as I stumble through the net ….. I take a lot more care when it’s a business/cash promoting site.
So …. the moral of my story ….. if you want your business site(s) to be taken seriously ….. get the spelling ‘rite’ or you willn’t get annie kustomers to buy your stuf.
I hope you recive my posting in good will! ![]()

Hey
thanks for the compliments (I’m taking the business name choice and professi[o]nal web site as compliments)
The correction of a number of spelling errors already took place thanks to some feedback on a thread on boards.ie
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055182916
Please god I never make the “receive” mistake
I was always taught the I Before E except after C
… ( I was quite confused looking at my content trying to find that then I realised I hadn’t made it)
Anyways a while back I posted looking for a content writer and you’ll be happy to know I’ve found one so I had taken your post on board even before you had made it
Unfortunately my business website doesn’t get much attention on the whole.
Regards,
James

Thanks for taking my compliments (& criticism) in good spirit ….
Your comment re. your business site not getting as much attention as it should seems to be a contradiction in terms of its purpose ….. more and more people search the net for services … including searching for the services of web designers …. and a well maintained business site tells alot about the service a potential customer may receive.
The biggest thing that stands out when I view sites are the out od date copyright notices. A small thing but very noticeable. An easy solution …. javascript
I hope your business goes well for you … Gach rath ort agus ar do chuid oibre!
Trying to set up a ‘part-time’ web design business here but unsure of the niche I should be aiming for. If you have any advice ….. ears wide open here!

In terms of accessibility javascript dates are a no no. Turning off javascript and what happens ?
a small bit of php code would be much preferable like I’ve just done on my site in my footer file
PHEW
The date thing seems to get overlooked a LOT unfortunately by myself and by others.
As you say a well maintained business site tells a lot about the company … unfortunately I don’t have enough time just right now to have it well maintained.
Word of mouth seems to be good to me at the moment as I’ve quite a number of smaller projects on the go and some larger scale projects in the works. If/When there is a slow down I think my site will start to look better and better :D.
The portfolio section leaves a lot to be desired / is non existent similarly, my services section is empty which is a no no in terms of what I do. Thankfully I’m aware of most of the problems with my site and have a plan on attacking them over the next few months. Does it lose me business hopefully not. Its all about growing a few years back I couldn’t handle criticism
My advice on setting up yourself in web design would be … DON’T DO IT!!! *rocks back and forth* just joking. Getting into it full time is a strange thing. I’d previously worked for a bigger company and a nice steady cash flow every month is a major plus.
Realistically figure out what you’re good at and find the right people to do what you’re not good at. Network network network (no not ethernet cable)
Don’t scrimp on the little things … and get involved with some online boards you’ll be amazed at how much there is to learn.
ok enough rambling from me no doubt you’re bored now
