The .htaccess file - preventing directory browsing

May 20th, 2007 at 10:36 pm by Lord Bloggit

I learned something new today - I discovered the .htaccess file!

If you have a directory which doesn’t have a default file (index.html), like a folder of images, for example, a visitor to your site may enter an address ending with a / and see a list of all the files in the directory.

SynthHQ - Synthesizer and Electronic Music Resource

May 19th, 2007 at 12:04 am by Lord Bloggit

SynthHQ - Synthesizer and Electronic Music Resource

As the title suggests this site is all about electronic music and synthesizers.

The introduction to the site states (and I quote):

“Synth HQ is your site for everything synthesizer related. Started in 2005 this site focuses on both new and  vintage synthesizer information. The synth and module categories are filled with info, tech specs, and consumer reviews. The products have been manually added based on the quality and popularity of the instruments. All of the new products featured are available for purchase through zZounds which offers the guaranteed lowest price and free shipping.”

The sites details information on 61-Key Synthesizers, 76-Key Synthesizers, 88-Key Synthesizers and Compact Synthesizers. Pages are dedicated to modules, midi-controllers and digital pianos

Information on available accessories is also included - stands, bags, cases, benches, power adaptors, sustain pedals and expression pedals. Expansion of use is also dealt with.
The site is well laid out. It looks quite professional and an explanatory/introductory paragraph is included in each page.
Items listed for sale have short but concise product descriptions and the associated images though small are very effective.

Google AdSense is well integrated into the page and is very relevant to the products on offer. A user certainly would be tempted to click on the ads as they are a seamless extension of what the site has to offer.

Information Overload

May 13th, 2007 at 11:22 pm by Lord Bloggit

Amazing how the amount of files, folders, programs and everything else seems to fill my hard drive so quickly. I have a laptop with 120 GB of storage and various external storage devices …. with probably a total of 500 GB of storage …. yet I have amassed an amazing amount over the years! And I won’t even start talking about duplicate files! :???:

Even my favorites folder is getting out of hand! Downloading FREE STUFF from DP doesn’t help either. What am I going to do with it? :?:

Word Cloud Script

May 12th, 2007 at 9:59 pm by Lord Bloggit

I bought a copy of a Word Cloud script in the hope that I’ll be able to set up a site offering links to sites I review - they might reciprocate by providing a link back to me. I’m having difficulty installing it at the moment - it appears that my hosting service may not support certain aspects of the script. I thought this would be a straight forward enough process. But no …. it has to be awkward!

The Freebie Guide

May 12th, 2007 at 12:40 am by Lord Bloggit

The Freebie Guide

How to get stuff for free … nada … zilch … nothing … gratis … without charge …

First message I encountered when I clicked on the PSP link:

Newsflash

Only registered users get our site reviews and offer reviews! Please send all tpyos found and suggestions/requests to thefreebieguidehelp AT gmail.com (I changed email address layout …. don’t want to encourage SPAM)

A bad start (cos I didn’t want to register - not until the site has a reputation etc.) but things can only get better ….. or can they?

The ‘Guides’ section is well written and the FAQ and Overview are very informative.

I got an ‘Out of memory at line: 2‘ when I clicked on ‘Forums’ and it kept popping up when I clicked on some of the forum links.

A nice joomla site just a problem with the integrated forum.

PROS:

  • Has potential
  • Nice site design
  • The ‘Guides’ section is well written and the FAQ and Overview are very informative.

CONS:

When I first clicked into the site I had great hopes for it but a number of things have turned me off the site:

  • The error on the forum page
  • The lack of content
  • Under ‘Reviews’, the Offers section didn’t have any offers to offer!
  • The external link in top tab taking me away from site.

OVERALL:
I won’t be bookmarking the site.

VOIP Guide Solution Free calls Worldwide

May 11th, 2007 at 11:55 pm by Lord Bloggit

VOIP Guide Solution Free calls Worldwide

Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.

This site has all the information you need about VOIP. As far as I can make out this site came into being in December 2006. Since then it has built up a subscriber base currently at 3,115. A great indication of its popularity.

Posts are quite regular …. averaging at a post every two days but the posts contain quality information …. no wonder so many are subscribed.
